Located at the symbolic border of two sciences, geology and history, the exceptional ancient geosite from Măgura Călanului, the main source of stone for the blocks used at the Dacian fortresses from the Șureanu Mountains, awaits scientific recognition and historical inclusion in the national and world cultural heritage.
HISTORICAL LIMESTONE QUARRY

As surface traces are currently recognized, the area of the ancient quarry from Măgura Călanului hill belongs administratively to the city of Călan, Hunedoara county, respectively to its component localities Sântămăria de Piatră (Stony Saint Mary) and Valea Sângeorgiului.
HERITAGE
The Măgura Călanului limestone quarry is the most important preserved ancient quarry on the Romanian territory. But while the mentioned fortresses are today part of the UNESCO World Heritage, the quarry have never been systematically studied, protected or valued.
PROJECTS
Natural stone has definitely contributed to the modeling of rural and urban areas throughout human history. No other building material plays such an important role in the development of a wider region or territory, in terms of its use in the built heritage (as monuments, fortifications, civil buildings, castles and churches, roads or modern architecture), benchmarking the historical and cultural development.
